Historical notePhotographs of a project in Sucker River taken by Lois Dalby of the Academic Education Branch of the Department of Education during the winter of 1975-76.
Scope and contentA set of 77 photographs taken in the small community of Sucker River, north of La Ronge, in 1975-76. The community mounted a project to make as many "old things" as the 14 participants in the project could remember from the old days. Many of the objects were made as models, as time and materials did not allow for full-size items. -p01: A sign made for the display of "old things". -p02: Some of the men who worked on the project. -p03: Some of the women. -p04: Part of the display: a thumb drill and the names of the objects in Cree and English. -p05: A model hand toboggan. -p06: Toboggan parts held together with cords during construction> -p07: The toboggan boards are held together with strips of wood and cord (originally made of rawhide or babiche), with grooves to recess the cord to prevent wear. -p08: The front of the toboggan held together with raw hide cords that continue to form the side rails. Note that the construction is flexible to allow the toboggan to ride over rough places. -p09: Two model hand toboggans and the jigs used for bending the boards. -p10 to -p11: Two model dog toboggans with the jigs used to bend up the front. -p12 to -p14: The leather cariole is fitted on and secured with cords. -p15: The wooden back is fitted in and secured to the cord side rails. The dog driver can stand in the little space behind the back and hang on to the handle. More often the driver runs, urging the dogs on. -p16: A cross-piece is sewn onto the front across both planks for strength. -p17 to -p18: Model toboggans showing construction. -p19 to -p21: Arrows including a blunt practice arrow. -p22: A bow string attached to a bow. -p23: A selection of bows and arrows - note how the bows are bent. -p24 to -p26: A mouse trap. -p27 to -p28: A model deadfall trap. -p29 to -p30: A muskrat spear - note the barbs. -p31 to -p33: Slush scoops used to scoop ice pieces and slush from water holes or holes in the ice where nets are put in. -p34: Other items including a weasel stretcher. -p35: Shuttles for making fishing nets. -p36: Netting shuttles, wooden floats, and a net. -p37 to -p39: Netting shuttles and a net made with them. -p40: Wooden floats for nets. -p41: Stones used for weights on nets. -p42: Shuttles, weights, nets, and floats. -p43: A fish pick used to loosen the net from the fish, and netting needles. -p44: Fishing tools. -p45 to -p48: Model snowshoes under construction. -p49: Shows how the toe of the snowshoe is fastened and the toe supports are placed. -p50: Shows how the heel is fastened and braced - note the cord threaded through the frame to start the lacing. -p51: The finished snowshoe toes. -p52: Shows how the middle of the snowshoes are laced. -p53: The finished heels. -p54: A finished pair of snowshoes - note the decoration. -p55: A display of finished snowshoes. -p56: Tiny model snowshoes. -p57: Stretchers for animal skins. -p58 to -p59: Details of a wolf stretcher. -p60: Muskrat stretchers. -p61: A fox stretcher. -p62: Beaver hides stretched on willow hoops showing the fleshed side. -p63: Showing the fur side. -p64: Detail of a beaver stretcher. -p65: Small baskets. -p66: Moccasins and baskets. -p67: Two different styles of moccasins. -p68: Moccasins with fur and beads. -p69: Moccasins and baskets. -p70: A tikunagun or baby cradle. -p71: A doll in a tikunagun. -p72: Detail of a tikunagun. -p73 to -p74: A model of a trapline camp in the bush. -p75 to -p77: A display of many of the "old things" made during the project.
