Scope and contentFile contains a copy of Mike Gaffney's paper, "Building a 'Discipline' in Alaska Native Studies at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks," presented to the Society for Applied Anthropology Conference, March 17, 1984. (A working paper) Gaffney was an Associate Professor of Native Studies at the University of Alaska. His paper states that their program "seeks to provide the student with (1) a keen awareness of the scope, richness, and variety of Alaskan Native culture heritages, and (2) a series of contemporary and comparative perspectives on the Native experience in a plural society in North America." At the time he saw the program's main weaknesses as lack of standard textbooks and faculty recruitment and retention.
