Hetty King, 1883- 1972.  British

Hetty King, real name Winifred Emms, made her debut on the boards of English music hall with her comedian father at the age of six.  She first performed in London in 1897 and made her American vaudeville premiere in October 1907.  She performed to great acclaim around the world for over seventy years and was billed as “The King of the Male Impersonators.” In addition to music hall and vaudeville she starred in many Christmas pantomimes.

King was especially noted for her songs impersonating British sailors and soldiers. Her musical hits included “All the Nice Girls Love a Sailor”, “Piccadilly”, “What Does a Sailor Care?”, and “Fill’em Up”.  Her act was performed straight with little innuendo or double-entendre. Her expressed goal was to sing boy’s songs as boys would sing them.
