CORA: SGS Letter

April 20, 2007

Mayor Pat Fiacco
City of Regina
Queen Elizabeth II Court
Box 1790
Regina, SK S4P 2C8

Dear Mayor Fiacco,

It is with extreme disappointment that we have learned of the possibility of funding cuts the City of Regina Archives.

The Saskatchewan Genealogical Society, over the past 38 years, has been a strong advocate for the preservation and conservation of historical records in Saskatchewan. They have ensured that these records are readily accessible to all those who wish to research them. The reduction of funding for the City of Regina Archives would have a significant affect on individuals and organizations researching the history of Regina. As this city is an integral part of the development of the province it would be disappointing not to be able to have ready access to these historical documents and records. We are concerned as well that new acquisition to the City of Regina Archives would be in jeopardy. I’m sure you will agree that it is extremely important to ensure that the preservation and accessibility to archival records of Regina, as well as all communities, is essential to learning and writing about these communities.

The SGS strongly encourages you to reconsider any funding reduction to the City Archives which would reduce access to your historical documents and records.

Sincerely,

Linda Dunsmore-Porter
Executive Director
Saskatchewan Genealogical Society
